From April 2012 BCS are changing the name of this module to 'Commercial Awareness'. It will still be a Knowledge-based module for the BCS Diploma in Business Analysis. The format of the exam will also change. It will become a multiple choice rather than a written exam. Certificates issued under 'Organisational Context' will still be valid for the Diploma.
The BCS certificate in Organisational Context is also available as public training as part of our Advanced Business Analysis training course.
Course Details
This two day course covers the syllabus and written exam for the BCS certificate in Organisational Context, the Knowledge-based specialism module for the BCS Diploma in Business Analysis.
BCS Organisational Context - Intended Audience
This two day course is aimed at those who want work towards their BCS Diploma in Business Analysis. It is available as a public scheduled course or an on-site course.
This BCS accredited course is concerned with the business environment within which organisations have to operate.
There are three key elements to the syllabus:
- the nature of organisations, their legal basis, management and structures
- legislation of concern to the IS professional
- business finance.
Part of the BCS Diploma in Business Analysis
Organisational Context is the Knowledge-based specialism module for those wanting to achieve their BCS Diploma in Business Analysis. To obtain the full Diploma candidates must also obtain the Core modules of Requirements Engineering and Business Analysis Practice (formally Essentials) and the Practitioner specialism module of Modelling Business Processes. Candidates must also take a one hour oral exam directly with the BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT following successful completion of the four modular certificates.
BCS Organisational Context Course Objectives
By the end of the course the Business Analyst will be able to:
- Describe the range and type of business organisations in the UK
- Describe the advantages and disadvantages of a range of management structures operated within organisations
- Describe the work carried out by key functions found within organisations
- Explain legislative issues affecting information systems
- Describe the range of activities carried out by financial and management accountants
- Interpret the contents of the balance sheet and profit and loss account
- Use investment appraisal, costing and cash flow forecasting techniques

Case Study
A team-based case study is used throughout covering the course. Delegates are encouraged to make short informal presentations at the end of each case study exercise to build their confidence.

Course information
The duration of this course is two days. Courses run from approximately 9.30 - 5.30 on the first day and 9.00 until 5.15 on subsequent days. During the last 1 hour 15 minutes of the course candidates sit the BCS exam in Organisational Context, the exam fee is included in the costs shown above. The format for the examination is a one hour written (open book) examination based on a business scenario with 15 minutes reading time.
The course is non-residential, however we can provide a list of recommended hotels close to the venue for those wanting to arrange accommodation. Tea, coffee and soft drinks are available durig the course, however delegates should make their own lunch arrangements.
