Business Analysis Essentials - Intended Audience

This three day course is aimed at those who want work towards their ISEB International Diploma in Business Analysis.  It is available as a public scheduled course or an on-site course.

This ISEB accredited course is focussed on using a strategic approach to the investigation and improvement of business situations with a view to developing effective, feasible business solutions.

(Note - this is not a basic Business Analysis training course and is therefore NOT recommended as an introductory course for inexperienced Business Analysts).

There are two key elements to the syllabus: the development of a business strategy and the exploration of a business issue, whether a problem or opportunity. For the first element, candidates are required to understand a range of strategic analysis and performance management techniques. For the second element, they are required to be able to apply business analysis techniques within a defined framework.

Part of the ISEB International Diploma in Business Analysis

Business Analysis Essentials is one of the compulsory modules for those wanting to achieve their ISEB Diploma in Business Analysis.  To obtain the full Diploma candidates must also obtain the other compulsory module of Requirements Engineering, the Knowledge-based specialism module of Organisational Context and the Practitioner  specialism module of Modelling Business Processes.  Candidates must also take a one hour oral exam directly with the British Computer Society following successful completion of the four modular certificates. 

Business Analysis Essentials Course Objectives

By the end of the course the Business Analyst will be able to:

    ·         Describe how a business strategy is developed.

    ·         Use strategic analysis techniques.

    ·         Describe the need for project discipline.

    ·         Explain techniques to investigate an organisation’s business systems.

    ·         Describe an approach to improving business systems.

    ·         Explain the importance of stakeholder management and use a stakeholder analysis technique.

    ·         Use techniques for the analysis and modelling of business systems.

    ·         Describe how recommendations for business improvement may be identified.

    ·         Describe the contents of a rigorous business case for the development and implementation of business changes.

    ·         Use investment appraisal techniques.

    ·         Explain the derivation of IT requirements from the definitions of business improvements.

    ·         Explain the importance of assuring the business case once the changes have been implemented.

Module 5 - Business perspectives
Module 6 - Analysing and modelling business activities
Module 7 - Identifying potential solutions
Module 8 - Making the business case
Module 9 - Accepting the business case

 At the end of the third day candidates will take their ISEB exam in Business Analysis Essentials

Case Study

A team-based case study is used throughout the course modules. Delegates are encouraged to make short informal presentations at the end of each case study exercise to build their confidence.

Course information

The duration of this course is three days. Courses run from approximately 9.30 - 5.30 on the first day and 9.00 until 5.15 on subsequent days. During the last 1 hour 15 minutes of the course candidates sit their ISEB exam in Business Analysis Essentials, the exam fee is included in the costs shown above.  The format for the examination is a one hour written (open book) examination based on a business scenario with 15 minutes reading time.

The course is non-residential, however we can provide a list of recommended hotels close to the venue for those wanting to arrange accommodation.  Refreshments and a cold buffet lunch are provided during the course.
